It may feel like lock up is working fine. Worn sun shell bushings will send you diagnosing for ever for this code. Cause: Ford tried to use a mechanical diode for the intermediate Sprague this year and it dident work so well.
Cause: The TCM applies the overrun clutches to operate the PTO on these transmissions, if all external electrical diagnosis has been done and still wont operate you may have failed overun clutches and or snap ring popped, worn out of drum causing no clutch apply and thus no PTO or weak PTO operations. Complaint: No lock or cycling lock up in and out, no lock up at low throttle, no codes. Cause: If you have no speedometer and no up shift you may have faulty speed sensor, some trucks have the speed sensor in the rear differential housing.
The signal branches off from sensor to speedometer, ECM and cruise control, and its not too uncommon to loose one part in wiring etc. Complaint: Ford truck All the transmission fluid blows out of bell housing, overheated, snow plowing, towing. Cause: Sometimes you can have sudden severe transmission fluid loss out of front seal, bell housing area when working the truck hard such as snow plowing, towing heavy loads, usually during hot weather Don't assume the seal is bad or you have another problem, it may have simply overheated due to heavy use or hot weather etc.
The real fix here is to check cooling system, add air to oil cooler on top of radiator if doesn't already have one and or install larger cooler.
You can have internal issues such as slipping TCC or clutches etc causing overheat as well. This may show up without heavy use. Cause: A cracked case such as around the bell housing or sometimes around the 4x4 adapter in 4x4 trucks is almost always related to a vibration from such source as bad or frozen u-joints in rear shaft, bent drive shaft, misaligned such as from lift kits etc.
If you replace a case for this reason make sure you find the cause or it will be back broken again. In some cases you can have corrosion build up between the bell housing and engine block which can push the transmission off the engine and break the bell housing area right around the bolt areas.
Complaint: E4OD diesel engines only: limp mode or starts in high gear, no tachometer, no codes. Cause: On the 7. Complaint: Sudden loss of forward movement only, has reverse and was working fine before. Perform 5 engagements from Park to Reverse. Each engagement should be five seconds apart. Perform 5 engagements from Drive to Reverse.
Perform 5 engagements from Reverse to Drive. Perform 5 engagements from Neutral to Drive. Then drive the vehicle in steady mid throttle range, up shift then slow down to stop and redo times. Cause: No signs of actually overheating or cold : Likely Failed transmission fluid sensor and or internal harness. Unplug the transmission vehicle harness connector and turn the key on with the engine off. If 5 volts is not seen, then the wire is damaged or the PCM may be defective.
If approximately 5 volts is seen then verify the external sensor ground circuit as follows. Leave the positive meter lead at terminal 18 where approximately 5 volts was previously seen.

Remove the negative meter lead from the known good ground and place the negative meter lead to terminal 22 in the vehicle harness connector. The meter reading should indicate the same 5 volts as when the negative meter lead was connected to ground. If approximately 5 volts is not seen at this time then the external ground circuit is at fault. This should be done on nay overhaul repair etc to prevent this from happening again. One cause can be a worn pressure regulator valve and or sticking valve that allows a slam into gear or low pressure and then a slam causing a neutral drop condition that can break the drum.
Always check pressure regulator valve, and bore for wear or sticking. Do Not use any other kind of transmission fluids in this transmission as damage will result. With trucks built before there's an updated manual valve to fix a problem with a clunk or thump when coming out of reverse to park position. Youll have to remove the solenoid control body and then replace the manual valve.
You may need to replace the body gasketa s well when removing the solenoid body. Theres been allot of venting complaints with this transmission and the cause if its not overfull or overheating can be the pump halves are warping and have cross leaks.Technical information for 6L80E transmission. P P Cause: Possible codes P Sol 5 stuck off or P Sol 5 performance, Very possible that the number one check ball in the valve body has shrunken and wont seal or is missing. Cause: The low Sprague may be failing, will only happen in drive range, if you try manual low you will not have up shift problem when manually shifting.
There's is an updated Sprague element that came into production in with 38 elements and if you have the 30 element Sprague always update it. Cause: The Pressure regulator valve in the pump is worn out in the bore, as well as other valves in pump and valve body.
Cause: Likely problem here is the end of the park rod is breaking and its holding the truck in park still. GM part number for park rod: QWE replace these on every overhaul that has any mileage on it, especially over K. There's 3 different drums depending on the unit so be careful and get the correct one.
