This directs the fluid into the valve body which engages the desired gear. While anything in this system could have gone array, if your transmission fluid is very low it could be a possible inexpensive fix.

Issues with the Speed Sensor Believe or not, a faulty speed sensor could be the reason your transmission only works in reverse. The speed sensor provides information to the car to determine how fast you are going. It utilizes a magnetic sensor which also can allow for smooth shifting of the gears inside your transmission.

How to Tell if Your Automatic Transmission is Bad

While it may seem silly that a simple speed sensor could make your car not drive properly, all of these systems work in conjunction with each other. Often times a faulty speed sensor can cause an erratically shifting transmission, however, it is possible that it can prevent it from shifting properly at all.

If any of these causes are the issue you should have your transmission assessed by an AAMCO mechanic right away to determine the root cause and find the correct way to repair your transmission.

You May Have a Faulty Transmission Unfortunately, there may be several underlying transmission issues involved. This could likely be due to a faulty computer that controls the transmission, a faulty transmission solenoid, or another issue with your transmission. In a manual or stick shift transmission, you can experience this issue if there are problems with your shift linkage, grommets, or cables.

Transmission oil pumps provide fluid pressure for the transmission and torque converter.

Gear and rotor-type pumps are considered fixed displacement. Most transmissions today have variable displacement pumps that vary or change fluid pressure according to demands.

With a fixed displacement pump, the pressure increases with rotational speed, sometimes providing unneeded pressure. With a variable displacement pump, the pressure is allowed to decrease with lesser demand.

It saves energy by reducing output without affecting speed. Transmission pumps are driven directly from the engine through the torque converter. The torque converter housing is mechanically attached to the engine's crankshaft causing the pump to operate whenever the engine is running.

It's why a worn or faulty pump makes a whining noise in all gears, including park and neutral. A restricted or clogged transmission filter makes the same whining noise as a faulty transmission pump. It's crucial when diagnosing a transmission pump or a torque converter. Make sure the filter's good before replacing the pump.

Diagnosing a transmission is the same as anything else; it often ends up being a process of elimination. Begin with the basics and remember if something is not moving; it's not making a noise.

It's essential when diagnosing the drivetrain and planetary gearsets. In drive with the wheels held stationary, the entire drivetrain's stationery, eliminating these items as a potential cause of the noise. Study Tips Test Format Feedback.

Transmission Oil Pump The engine and drivetrain must be ruled out before troubleshooting transmission noise or vibration. The Torqshift transmission provides the Ford Super Duty truck with more pulling and hauling power. The transmission is paired with the diesel engine in Ford Super Duty trucks, and there have been technical service bulletins TSBs as well as reports of problems being experienced by some of these trucks' owners.

A TSB was issued by the manufacturer about reports of bucking and jerking experienced by owners of trucks equipped with the Torqshift transmission. Most of these issues occurred under load or while hauling, but some reports of bucking and jerking occurred during normal operation.

This transmission problem is attributed to a transmission fluid leak reported in another TSB. The leak was thought to be coming from the rear seal of the transmission but was found to be coming from the torque converter and gasket where the Torqshift transmission and engine fit together. Low transmission fluid causes the transmission to jerk during driving, and the seals as well as the gasket must be replaced to correct this problem. Another TSB published about the Torqshift transmission concerns harsh shifting and slipping between gears.

This transmission problem occurs primarily under cold conditions or when the vehicle has not been driven for some time. The problem is attributable to the Torqshift's solenoid.

The remedy involves replacing the body of the solenoid, along with the solenoid wiring harness. The solenoid body was installed without a pressure sensor which causes harsh shifting and slipping of gears. Many complaints as well as a TSB published on the Torqshift transmission concern a excessive delay when shifting the transmission into reverse or forward.

This transmission problem is due to a sticking line pressure control solenoid. Over time, the line will develop a buildup of metallic debris from a defective reverse pinion shaft; this will clog the line, and the pressure control solenoid will stick.

The Torqshift transmission must be disassembled and the pinion shaft replaced in order to correct this problem with the reverse gear. If there is no metallic debris in the fluid or the line, the solenoid wiring harness is the cause of the delayed forward drive and must be replaced. But, there are some troubles that come without any warning. One such vexing issue is car wont move in drive but will in reverse. Transmissionsespecially, the automatic transmission only goes in reverse in the event of the failure or damage of a component in the system.

It could also be a fault with the speed sensor.

Transmission is most likely to be the culprit for the car wont move in drive but will in reverse problem. When the vehicle does not function in one or more gears, you should check the gear shifter. The gear cable could be stretched further than the normal length and requires adjusting.

The failure of some internal components can be the cause too. The car will reverse but not go forward because of worn out solenoids, clutches, or gears. Some issues are simple and you can fix them in your garage. But, professional attention is required when the problem lies with some inner parts. Some other transmission snags that can lead to the trouble of car wont move in drive but will in reverse are:. Transmission Fluid — Low level of fluid is a potential reason for making the car moving to reverse only.

Check the level when the engine is hot and the vehicle runs in neutral. Use the transmission dipstick to see if the fluid is running low. The transmission cannot operate properly when it does not get enough supply of fluid. Cracked Fluid Tube — A broken fluid tube might be the one causing the complication and it mainly occurs in the models of Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G5. When the forward tube at the pipe joint cracks or breaks, the car cannot move forward except for going reverse.

The repair is easy as you just need to replace the damaged parts. If the information is erratic, the transmission may face the problem of working in reverse only. Again, issues with the transmission could be behind this complication.

It could be something as simple as broken, loose, or bent reverse linkage. But, you cannot rule out the worn out internal components.

When the fluid pump and other related components wear out, the fluid pressure drops an can get high enough only to operate in reverse. Whether your car wont move in drive but will in reverse or shows a problem opposite to it, take it to a service center for a thorough transmission checkup. Technical information for Ford E4OD and 4R Transmissions including harness connector pin identification and pressure testing specifications. Cause: Several things can be the cause here, one simply being the fluid is deteriorated badly and a fluid and filter change may remedy the problem.

Second is the converter clutch is glazed, damaged or other issue in the torque converter. Third is that the bushings in the transmission are worn and causing leakage in the converter ckt. On the Diesel and V engines its highly recommended to use a converter with Billet front cover to prevent warpage and HD clutch. Stalls in reverse. Cause: When engine stalls when put into forward and reverse gears, may be hot or cold, or all the time the likely problem is that the lock up solenoid is mechanically stuck.

Other causes can be stuck valves in the valve body and or even the converter has an issue inside. Cause: code 62 or P means you have no lock up and or slipping lock up.

It may feel like lock up is working fine. Worn sun shell bushings will send you diagnosing for ever for this code. Cause: Ford tried to use a mechanical diode for the intermediate Sprague this year and it dident work so well.

Cause: The TCM applies the overrun clutches to operate the PTO on these transmissions, if all external electrical diagnosis has been done and still wont operate you may have failed overun clutches and or snap ring popped, worn out of drum causing no clutch apply and thus no PTO or weak PTO operations. Complaint: No lock or cycling lock up in and out, no lock up at low throttle, no codes. Cause: If you have no speedometer and no up shift you may have faulty speed sensor, some trucks have the speed sensor in the rear differential housing.

The signal branches off from sensor to speedometer, ECM and cruise control, and its not too uncommon to loose one part in wiring etc. Complaint: Ford truck All the transmission fluid blows out of bell housing, overheated, snow plowing, towing. Cause: Sometimes you can have sudden severe transmission fluid loss out of front seal, bell housing area when working the truck hard such as snow plowing, towing heavy loads, usually during hot weather Don't assume the seal is bad or you have another problem, it may have simply overheated due to heavy use or hot weather etc.

The real fix here is to check cooling system, add air to oil cooler on top of radiator if doesn't already have one and or install larger cooler.

You can have internal issues such as slipping TCC or clutches etc causing overheat as well. This may show up without heavy use. Cause: A cracked case such as around the bell housing or sometimes around the 4x4 adapter in 4x4 trucks is almost always related to a vibration from such source as bad or frozen u-joints in rear shaft, bent drive shaft, misaligned such as from lift kits etc.

If you replace a case for this reason make sure you find the cause or it will be back broken again. In some cases you can have corrosion build up between the bell housing and engine block which can push the transmission off the engine and break the bell housing area right around the bolt areas.

Complaint: E4OD diesel engines only: limp mode or starts in high gear, no tachometer, no codes. Cause: On the 7. Complaint: Sudden loss of forward movement only, has reverse and was working fine before. Common issue here can be the forward drum splines have stripped out where the input from front carrier goes into drum.

This problem was more prevalent on older 6 cylinder trucks. Complaint: 4R No second gear, model years only.Ford 5RW Tech tips. Any time the battery is disconnected for any reason, including dead battery, a new PCM has been installed, or the calibration has been reflashed, the adapts for the "Engagement Schedule" should be reset. This procedure will prevent the customer from returning with firm or harsh shift or engagement complaints. Proceed as follows: Note: All of the following engagements must be performed, in order for engagement pressures to correctly adapt with the new calibration.

Perform 5 engagements from Park to Reverse. Each engagement should be five seconds apart. Perform 5 engagements from Drive to Reverse.

Perform 5 engagements from Reverse to Drive. Perform 5 engagements from Neutral to Drive. Then drive the vehicle in steady mid throttle range, up shift then slow down to stop and redo times. Cause: No signs of actually overheating or cold : Likely Failed transmission fluid sensor and or internal harness. Unplug the transmission vehicle harness connector and turn the key on with the engine off. If 5 volts is not seen, then the wire is damaged or the PCM may be defective.

If approximately 5 volts is seen then verify the external sensor ground circuit as follows. Leave the positive meter lead at terminal 18 where approximately 5 volts was previously seen.

the transmission shifts hard when put into drive or reverse

Remove the negative meter lead from the known good ground and place the negative meter lead to terminal 22 in the vehicle harness connector. The meter reading should indicate the same 5 volts as when the negative meter lead was connected to ground. If approximately 5 volts is not seen at this time then the external ground circuit is at fault. This should be done on nay overhaul repair etc to prevent this from happening again. One cause can be a worn pressure regulator valve and or sticking valve that allows a slam into gear or low pressure and then a slam causing a neutral drop condition that can break the drum.

Always check pressure regulator valve, and bore for wear or sticking. Do Not use any other kind of transmission fluids in this transmission as damage will result. With trucks built before there's an updated manual valve to fix a problem with a clunk or thump when coming out of reverse to park position. Youll have to remove the solenoid control body and then replace the manual valve.

You may need to replace the body gasketa s well when removing the solenoid body. Theres been allot of venting complaints with this transmission and the cause if its not overfull or overheating can be the pump halves are warping and have cross leaks.Technical information for 6L80E transmission. Complaint: Transmission slips in forward range, first gear take off.

P P Cause: Possible codes P Sol 5 stuck off or P Sol 5 performance, Very possible that the number one check ball in the valve body has shrunken and wont seal or is missing. Cause: The low Sprague may be failing, will only happen in drive range, if you try manual low you will not have up shift problem when manually shifting.

There's is an updated Sprague element that came into production in with 38 elements and if you have the 30 element Sprague always update it. Cause: The Pressure regulator valve in the pump is worn out in the bore, as well as other valves in pump and valve body.

Cause: Likely problem here is the end of the park rod is breaking and its holding the truck in park still. GM part number for park rod: QWE replace these on every overhaul that has any mileage on it, especially over K. There's 3 different drums depending on the unit so be careful and get the correct one.
